Description
The fungus Pestalotia diospyri (also known as Pestalotiopsis diospyri) is a significant pathogen that affects persimmon trees worldwide. It belongs to the class of mitosporic fungi and is known to cause severe foliar damage and shoot blight. The pathogen is highly adapted to surviving in leaf litter and infected woody tissues during the winter season, serving as a primary inoculum source for the following year.
The primary hosts of this disease are various species of Diospyros, most notably the Oriental persimmon (Diospyros kaki). The disease is most prevalent in environments characterized by high humidity and warm temperatures, which facilitate the rapid spread of spores via wind, rain splashes, and physical contact during maintenance operations.
The symptoms of infection typically start as small, circular, or irregular brown spots on the leaves. As the lesion expands, the center becomes necrotic and may turn greyish, eventually developing small, black, fruiting structures known as acervuli. Severe infections often lead to widespread chlorosis, premature defoliation, and shoot dieback, which weakens the overall health of the tree.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the outbreak. Sustained high humidity and frequent rainfall provide an ideal climate for the spores to germinate and penetrate the host tissue. Poor orchard hygiene and high-density planting exacerbate the problem by preventing adequate airflow, allowing moisture to linger on the leaf surfaces for extended periods.
Management of the disease requires an integrated approach to minimize fungal pressure. Economic loss is primarily driven by reduced photosynthetic capacity, leading to poor fruit development and yield loss. Effective prevention and control strategies include:
- Regular sanitation by removing and destroying fallen leaves and infected twigs.
- Applying preventive fungicide sprays during periods of high disease pressure.
- Pruning to ensure open canopy structures and better air circulation.
- Monitoring the orchard closely during the active growing season for early signs of lesions.
