Pestalotiopsis disseminata is a pathogenic fungus known for causing necrotic lesions and blights across a wide array of plant species. As a facultative parasite, this organism targets both ornamental plants and commercial crops, often taking advantage of plants that are already stressed by environmental factors, nutrient deficiencies, or previous pest damage.
The host range for this fungus is extensive, frequently affecting conifers, palms, citrus, and various greenhouse crops. In susceptible plants, the infection compromises the integrity of leaf, stem, and occasionally fruit tissues, leading to premature senescence and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected plant tissue or the entire organism.
Symptoms typically manifest as chlorotic spots that transition into necrotic lesions. These spots often develop a dark brown or black margin, which is a key diagnostic feature. Under humid conditions, the centers of these lesions produce masses of conidia, visible as black, pinhead-sized acervuli, often releasing a whitish or pale-colored spore mass.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dispersal and survival of the fungus. High humidity and rainfall facilitate the spread of spores, as water splashes move the inoculum from infected to healthy plant tissues. High temperatures combined with poor air circulation further accelerate the colonization of the host plant by the pathogen.
Management strategies require an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and cultural practices. Removing infected foliage is the first step to reduce the inoculum level in the growing environment. Chemical control, involving the application of registered fungicides, should be timed to prevent new infections. Growers should prioritize improving air circulation and minimizing leaf wetness to discourage the establishment of the disease.
