Pestalotiopsis guepinii is a pathogenic fungus known for causing necrotic leaf spots, stem cankers, and dieback in a diverse array of plant species. As a widespread pathogen, it poses a significant threat to nurseries, commercial orchards, and ornamental landscapes, often compromising the aesthetic and economic value of infected hosts.
The host range of Pestalotiopsis is notably broad, frequently affecting conifers such as arborvitae and junipers, as well as broadleaf evergreens like rhododendrons, azaleas, and palms. In some agricultural regions, it has also been reported as a significant issue for crops such as tea, grapes, and various tropical fruits.
The symptoms of this disease typically manifest as small, irregular spots on the foliage that gradually enlarge, often turning brown or gray with darker margins. As the infection progresses, tiny black fruiting structures known as acervuli appear on the necrotic tissues. These structures produce conidia that serve as the primary source of secondary infections in favorable weather.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of this pathogen. The fungus thrives in environments characterized by high humidity, prolonged periods of leaf wetness, and poor air circulation. It frequently exploits existing wounds caused by hail, pruning, or insect activity, making healthy plant maintenance a key defense strategy.
