Pestalotiopsis macadamiae is a pathogenic fungus responsible for significant disease outbreaks in macadamia orchards. It belongs to the genus Pestalotiopsis and is recognized as a primary agent of leaf spot and fruit decay in susceptible macadamia cultivars, impacting both yield quality and quantity.
This pathogen specifically targets the Macadamia genus. While it primarily affects leaves and young shoots, it is particularly damaging when it colonizes the fruit, leading to necrosis of the husk and subsequent secondary infections. The disease can occur at any stage of the plant's life, from seedlings in the nursery to mature orchard trees.
The characteristic symptoms include the formation of necrotic lesions on leaves and fruit. These lesions often start as small, water-soaked spots that expand and turn necrotic. A diagnostic feature is the appearance of dark, pinpoint-like acervuli (spore-bearing structures) developing on the necrotic tissue, which release masses of conidia under humid conditions.
The development and spread of Pestalotiopsis macadamiae are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and rainfall. The fungal spores are splash-dispersed by rain or wind, allowing the pathogen to move quickly through a canopy during wet seasons. Furthermore, insect damage or mechanical injuries to the plant tissue significantly facilitate fungal entry.
