Pestalotiopsis psidii is a pathogenic fungus that acts as the causal agent of leaf spot and fruit rot in guava trees. As a member of the class Ascomycetes, this fungus significantly impacts the vitality of the host plant by colonizing its tissues and disrupting vital physiological processes.

The primary host for this pathogen is the common guava (Psidium guajava). While it primarily affects leaves and fruits, severe infections can lead to premature defoliation and fruit drop, which directly translates to substantial economic losses for orchardists in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Symptoms typically start as small, irregular necrotic spots on leaves that eventually enlarge, often developing greyish-brown centers with darker margins. On fruit, the pathogen causes sunken dark lesions that eventually turn into rot, often accompanied by the emergence of black spore masses (acervuli) under humid conditions.

The development and spread of Pestalotiopsis psidii are heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind-blown rain and splashing water, allowing it to move rapidly through an orchard.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, and the removal of infected debris to reduce inoculum levels. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides, such as copper-based sprays or triazoles, strategically timed before and during the periods of highest risk for disease progression.
