Description

The pathogen Petrakia echinata is a fungus responsible for specific leaf spot diseases on various maple species (genus Acer). It belongs to the group of hyphomycetes and primarily affects the foliage, leading to necrosis and premature leaf drop, which can significantly impact the health and aesthetic value of the trees.

Maple species such as Acer platanoides and Acer pseudoplatanus are the most common hosts. The disease is particularly problematic in landscape settings, nurseries, and botanical gardens where trees are planted densely. High-humidity environments and lack of proper air circulation within the tree canopy create an ideal habitat for the fungus to establish and thrive.

Symptoms typically appear as dark brown or black lesions on the leaf blades. These spots often vary in size and shape, sometimes coalescing into larger necrotic patches. Within the centers of these lesions, the fungus produces its spores, appearing as tiny, dark, granular masses. Over time, affected leaves become brittle, wither, and drop off prematurely.

The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly rainfall and high humidity, which facilitate the germination of conidia. The pathogen overwinters primarily in infected fallen leaves. As temperatures rise in spring, spores are released and disseminated by wind and splashing rain to new, developing leaves, initiating the seasonal infection cycle.

Effective control strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing and destroying all infected leaf litter in autumn is essential to reduce the primary inoculum level for the following year. In severe cases, the application of copper-based fungicides or appropriate systemic treatments should be performed early in the season to protect new growth and minimize the spread of the pathogen.
