The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Petrakia liobae, a pathogen primarily affecting various maple (Acer) species. This fungus belongs to the group of mitosporic fungi (deuteromycetes) and is known for causing localized necrotic damage to the leaves, which can negatively impact the overall vitality of the tree.
The host range is predominantly limited to deciduous trees, with a high preference for ornamental and forest maple species. The fungus establishes itself within the leaf tissue, drawing nutrients from the host and causing localized cell death, which prevents the leaf from performing its essential biological functions.
Diagnostic signs of infection include the development of distinct leaf spots. Initially, these spots appear as yellowish or light brown lesions that gradually expand and turn dark brown or black. In severe cases, the coalescence of these spots can cause large areas of the leaf to necroticize, leading to chlorosis and subsequent premature defoliation.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Petrakia liobae. High humidity, heavy rainfall, and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization. The pathogen is disseminated primarily through wind-borne conidia and splashing rainwater, which facilitates spread throughout the tree canopy.

To mitigate the damage, arborists and agronomists suggest a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining canopy airflow through proper pruning, removing infected debris during autumn, and applying targeted fungicides during the early growth stages are essential steps to curb the infection and maintain plant health.
