Brown cup (lat. Peziza badia) is an ascomycete fungus of the Pezizaceae family. Although it is primarily classified as a saprotroph in mycology, its presence in agricultural fields with high moisture levels often indicates an imbalance in soil microbiology and creates conditions suitable for the spread of more harmful plant pathogens.

The causative agent belongs to the class Ascomycetes. Biologically, this organism acts as a soil reducer, yet due to high density in the rhizosphere, it can suppress the development of agricultural crops. Its effect is often opportunistic, where the mycelium competes with the root system for vital nutrients and oxygen in the soil.

Primary crops at risk during excessive mycelial growth include greenhouse vegetables, berry crops, and ornamental plants. Symptoms include stunted plant growth, chlorosis of the lower leaves, and partial necrosis of fine root hairs due to the displacement of beneficial soil microorganisms that support plant health.

The development and spread of this fungus are directly linked to soil saturation, poor drainage, and inadequate ventilation in indoor cultivation areas. The fungus thrives in moderate temperatures and acidic substrates, effectively serving as an indicator of poor agricultural soil management practices.

Control and prevention measures focus on maintaining strict irrigation schedules and improving soil structure. It is recommended to perform regular liming to reduce acidity and utilize bio-fungicides based on Trichoderma to displace the fungus from the substrate. Clearing soil of excess organic debris remains a critical step for long-term prevention.
