Granular Peziza (lat. Peziza granulosa) is a type of ascomycete fungus often found in greenhouse environments and nurseries. Although it is not typically considered a lethal parasite of healthy plants, it acts as an indicator of poor soil management, high humidity, and excessive organic content in growing media, posing a risk to sensitive seedling development.

The fungus is a saprotroph, meaning it feeds on decaying organic matter. It primarily colonizes peat-based substrates, wood bark, or compost that have been kept consistently damp. While it does not invade living plant tissues directly, its presence in large colonies can alter the soil structure and compete for nutrients, making the growth environment less than optimal for horticultural crops.

Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the appearance of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies on the soil surface. These bodies are typically yellowish-brown or ochre in color and can measure from a few millimeters to several centimeters. They are often accompanied by a fuzzy white or yellowish mycelial mat that covers the top layer of the substrate, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the plant roots.

The development of Peziza granulosa is dictated by environmental factors, most notably high moisture levels (often exceeding 80% humidity) and poor ventilation. The fungus thrives in stagnant air and waterlogged soil conditions, which are common in greenhouses that lack adequate airflow or proper drainage systems. Spores are released into the air and can rapidly contaminate other pots and beds.

Harmfulness lies in the disruption of the seedling's rhizosphere and potential nutrient sequestration. To manage and prevent the spread of the fungus, growers should prioritize the following actions:

  • Improve greenhouse ventilation to lower humidity levels.
  • Use sterilized or pasteurized potting media to eliminate fungal spores.
  • Ensure proper drainage to prevent water accumulation at the base of plants.
  • Manually remove surface fruiting bodies and contaminated topsoil immediately upon discovery.
  • Apply preventative fungicide treatments if cultural control methods fail to contain the spread.
