While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi can act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. The disease is caused by species belonging to the Pezizales order, typically manifesting as root and crown rot. The pathogen exploits damaged root tissues or areas weakened by poor soil conditions. It survives in the soil and on decaying organic debris, making it a persistent challenge in greenhouses and fields with poor sanitation practices.
Crops susceptible to Pezizaceae infections include greenhouse vegetables, nursery seedlings, and certain ornamental plants.
