The order Pezizales consists of ascomycete fungi that are primarily saprotrophic but can occasionally act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural environments. In professional agronomy, their presence in greenhouse soils or nurseries is often a sign of poor sanitation or excessive organic debris accumulation.

These fungi act as soil-borne pathogens. The infection typically affects the root zone, leading to physiological disorders and hindering nutrient uptake in developing crops. While not as aggressive as classic wilting pathogens, their colonization of the root zone can significantly stress young seedlings.

A wide variety of crops can be affected, particularly those grown in containers, raised beds, or under greenhouse conditions. Development is driven by high soil moisture content, poor water drainage, and the presence of decomposing plant material. The spores are primarily dispersed via contaminated water supplies, irrigation systems, or the movement of infested soil between growing areas.

Proactive management includes strict soil sterilization protocols, implementing efficient drainage systems, and using biological control agents like Trichoderma species. Maintaining a balanced soil moisture level and removing organic debris significantly reduces the habitat for Pezizales development.
