Phacidium blight, often referred to as snow blight, is a destructive fungal disease affecting coniferous trees caused by species within the Phacidium genus. This pathogen is particularly noted for its ability to thrive during winter periods under snow cover.

The primary hosts of this disease are various pine species. It poses a significant threat to forest nurseries, young plantations, and seedling stock, where the pathogen can spread rapidly due to high plant density and favorable microclimatic conditions.

Symptoms become apparent immediately after the snow melts in early spring. Infected needles typically turn a reddish-brown color, dry out, and may remain attached to the twigs for some time. Small, black fungal fruiting bodies (apothecia) appear on the underside of the needles, which is a key diagnostic feature.

The development of the fungus is strictly tied to environmental conditions, specifically long-lasting, deep snow cover that insulates the foliage and maintains high humidity. These conditions allow the mycelium to spread from infected needles to healthy adjacent needles throughout the winter months.

Management and prevention focus on creating conditions that discourage fungal growth, such as choosing well-drained planting sites and maintaining appropriate spacing between trees. Key control strategies include:

  • Application of specialized fungicides before the first snow.
  • Removal and destruction of heavily infected seedlings.
  • Monitoring nursery beds for early signs of needle discoloration.
  • Ensuring good air circulation within plantation stands.
