Phacidium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phacidium lauri (also known as Ceuthospora lauri). This pathogen primarily affects the foliage of laurel plants, leading to the development of necrotic spots. If left unmanaged, the infection can significantly damage the appearance and physiological health of the plant, especially in humid and warm climates.

The primary host for this fungus is the noble laurel (Laurus nobilis). The disease is most problematic in greenhouses, nurseries, or regions with high rainfall where plants are closely spaced, creating a microclimate that favors fungal growth. It is critical to identify the infection early to prevent secondary spread to healthy portions of the laurel canopy.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions on the leaves. These spots start as small, light-colored discolorations, which gradually expand and turn brown or grayish. Within these lesions, the fungus produces pycnidia — small, black reproductive structures that appear as tiny dots on the surface. As the infection progresses, large areas of the leaf blade may die, eventually causing premature leaf drop and stunting plant growth.

The spread of Phacidium lauri is heavily dependent on moisture. Spores are disseminated by water splashes and wind during wet conditions. Since the fungus persists in fallen leaves and infected woody parts, it can easily survive unfavorable seasons. High humidity and poor air circulation are the primary environmental factors that trigger mass infection events in laurel plantations.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Key control measures include:

  • Strict sanitation by collecting and destroying all fallen leaves to reduce inoculum.
  • Improving air circulation through proper pruning and spacing.
  • Application of protective fungicides during periods of high humidity.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry.
  • Monitoring plants closely during wet spring and autumn seasons.
