Phaeoacremonium nordesticola is a microscopic fungal pathogen that plays a significant role in the development of wood diseases in various plant species. As an endophytic fungus, it colonizes the vascular tissues of its host, leading to progressive structural decay and a decline in plant vigor over several seasons.
The primary host of this pathogen is the grapevine, although it can infect other woody perennial crops as well. The fungus typically enters the plant tissue through fresh wounds caused by pruning, mechanical harvesting damage, or natural cracks in the bark, making the healing process critical for prevention.
Symptoms of the infection often manifest as retarded shoot growth, leaf chlorosis, and the sudden wilting of branches. When the affected wood is cross-sectioned, characteristic dark streaks or necrotic spots are visible, representing the blockage of the xylem vessels and the degradation of the vascular system.
The spread of the pathogen is facilitated by moderate temperatures and high humidity. Spores (conidia) are dispersed primarily by wind and rain splashes, but human activity plays a major role as the fungus is readily transmitted via contaminated pruning shears and saws if they are not properly sanitized between plants.
