The blight caused by Phaeobotryon negundinis is a destructive fungal disease affecting the boxelder maple (Acer negundo). This pathogen acts primarily as a bark and vascular parasite, disrupting the tree's ability to transport nutrients and water through the phloem and cambium layers.

The fungus is highly specialized, predominantly infecting boxelder maple trees in both urban and rural environments. It is often considered an opportunistic pathogen, as it frequently colonizes trees already stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical injury.

The main symptoms of the infection include the formation of necrotic lesions on the branches and main trunk. The bark typically turns brown and becomes depressed, with small black fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus breaking through the surface. Wilting of the distal parts of the branches is a common visual indicator that the fungus has girdled the stem.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease progression. High humidity, prolonged rainfall, and mild temperatures are ideal for the release and germination of fungal spores. Infection usually occurs through wounds, pruning scars, or fissures in the bark created by frost or insect feeding.
