Phaeochoraceae is a family of fungi within the order Phyllachorales, known for containing numerous species that act as obligate parasites or endophytic pathogens on various plant hosts. These fungi are primarily responsible for causing necrotic leaf spots and blights, which significantly impact the physiological health and growth vigor of agricultural and ornamental plants.
The disease is caused by ascomycete fungi that develop stromata within the host tissues. The pathogen typically enters through stomata, colonizing the leaf mesophyll. By disrupting the photosynthetic process and diverting metabolic energy, the fungus reduces the plant's overall development and yield capacity, making them more susceptible to subsequent environmental stresses.
The host range is extensive, encompassing diverse plant species, including forest trees, horticultural shrubs, and various field crops. The impact is particularly detrimental in nursery conditions or greenhouses, where high plant density and controlled environments facilitate the rapid transmission and establishment of the fungal infection.
Common symptoms include localized lesions that manifest as brown or black spots on the foliage. These lesions are often accompanied by the emergence of tiny, dark fruiting bodies (ascomata) scattered across the leaf surface. As the disease progresses, necrotic areas may coalesce, leading to severe leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, and ultimately, defoliation.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungi propagate primarily via spores disseminated by splashing raindrops, wind currents, and mechanical handling. Overwintering occurs on fallen plant debris, providing an inoculum source for the following growing season.
