Phaeocytostroma stalk rot is a fungal disease caused by pathogens belonging to the genus Phaeocytostroma. Primarily recognized as a stalk rot pathogen in maize, this fungus acts as a facultative parasite that thrives on weakened plant tissues. It typically manifests during the late vegetative stages or the grain-filling period of the crop's development.

The characteristic symptom of the infection is the formation of small, black, pycnidial fruiting bodies on the surface of the lower corn stalks. As the disease progresses, the internal pith tissue of the stalk becomes discolored, necrotic, and eventually disintegrates. This structural degradation turns the stalk into a hollow or fibrous shell, making the plant highly susceptible to breakage under windy conditions.

Development and spread of the fungus are favored by environmental stress factors. Periods of moisture stress followed by high humidity are critical for infection. Furthermore, physical damage to the plant, whether caused by insects, hail, or mechanical harvesting machinery, significantly increases the likelihood of the pathogen entering the stalk tissue through wounds.
