The fungus Phaeocytostroma megalosporum is the causative agent of a specific type of stalk rot in corn. This pathogen attacks the vascular tissues and pith of the corn stalk, leading to tissue degradation. It is classified as an important disease that affects the structural integrity and overall yield of the crop.
Corn (maize) is the primary host for this fungus. The pathogen targets plants primarily at the maturity stage. While it may infect the plant earlier, visible symptoms and significant damage are most frequently observed as the plant approaches harvest, often affecting the lower nodes of the stalk.
Symptoms include the darkening of the rind and the appearance of numerous small, black pycnidia under the surface of the stalk. Affected stalks lose their strength and elasticity, which often leads to lodging. When the stalk is cut open, the internal pith appears discolored, shredded, or decayed, which is a hallmark of the infection.
The development of Phaeocytostroma megalosporum is highly dependent on environmental conditions. Warm, humid weather during the late vegetative and reproductive phases favors fungal growth. The inoculum persists in crop residues left on the field, which serve as the primary source of primary infection for the subsequent corn season.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to stalk breakage, making mechanical harvesting difficult and causing substantial grain loss in the field. Integrated management strategies involve selecting resistant corn hybrids, implementing strict crop rotation, and ensuring proper residue management through deep plowing or tillage to reduce the survival of the pathogen in the soil.
