Phaeocytostroma stalk rot is a fungal plant disease caused by the pathogen Phaeocytostroma plurivorum. This fungus primarily affects the vascular and structural tissues of host plants, leading to severe physiological disturbances. It is recognized as a significant threat to crop health, particularly in monoculture systems where the pathogen can persist in the soil and crop debris.

The primary host for this disease is maize (corn). The pathogen infects the stalk, often utilizing wounds created by insects or mechanical damage as entry points. While it is predominantly associated with maize, the fungus can potentially survive on other graminaceous hosts, making it a persistent challenge in diverse agricultural landscapes.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions on the outer stalk tissue, which may eventually darken as the fungal colonization progresses. The internal pith tissue becomes discolored and begins to decompose, losing its structural integrity. A key diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, black, fruiting structures called pycnidia on the surface of the infected stems.

Environmental factors, particularly warm temperatures and high humidity, are critical for the development and spread of Phaeocytostroma stalk rot. During the silking and grain-filling stages of maize, favorable moisture levels facilitate the release of spores and their transmission to healthy tissues. Stress conditions, such as drought or nutrient imbalance, further increase host susceptibility.
