In agricultural practice, particularly in soilless cultivation, it acts as a bio-contaminant that can negatively affect plant growth environments, though it does not cause parasitic infections within plant tissues.
The organism is a unicellular photosynthetic alga known for its unique polymorphism, allowing it to adapt to various environmental conditions. In hydroponic settings, it forms thick, brownish biofilms on moist surfaces, pipes, and substrates. While it does not consume the plant, its presence creates a physical barrier that restricts oxygen exchange and nutrient absorption at the root level.
Crops most frequently affected by these algal blooms include lettuce, herbs, and young seedlings grown in nutrient film technique (NFT) or deep water culture (DWC) systems. The bloom covers root systems, causing metabolic stress in plants and potentially leading to a decrease in overall yield if the infestation is severe and left unmanaged.
Development conditions for this diatom are ideal when there is high light intensity reaching the nutrient solution, coupled with a surplus of nitrogen and phosphorus. It spreads rapidly through airborne spores or water contamination, effectively colonizing any area that provides consistent moisture, mineral salts, and light exposure.
