Phaeolepiota is a genus of fungi belonging to the Agaricaceae family, primarily recognized for the species Phaeolepiota aurea. In the context of forest pathology and nursery management, it acts as a saprotrophic fungus that decomposes woody debris and organic matter. While not a typical parasitic disease of agricultural crops, it can pose challenges for forestry nurseries under specific environmental conditions.

The causative agent, Phaeolepiota aurea, functions as a decomposer of organic matter rich in nitrogen. It thrives in environments with high moisture and substantial levels of leaf litter or decaying plant material. By accelerating the breakdown of organic substances, it can modify soil chemical properties and affect the microbial balance required for healthy seedling development.

Tree seedlings in forestry nurseries are the primary culture group sensitive to the excessive presence of this fungus. In high-density planting environments, the mycelial network of the fungus can compete with root systems for nutrients and oxygen, particularly if the substrate is overly wet and the soil aeration is poor.

Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of large, golden-brown, velvety fruiting bodies during humid autumn conditions. Underground, the dense mycelium can envelop the rhizosphere, leading to reduced seedling vigor, stunted growth, and potential chlorosis as the seedling struggles to acquire adequate mineral uptake due to soil degradation.
