The disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Phaeophleospora concentrica, an ascomycete fungus. This pathogen primarily affects the foliage of host trees, disrupting physiological processes and causing significant stress to the plant's health through tissue necrosis.
The primary host for this disease is the eucalyptus genus. It poses a significant threat in various environmental settings, including forest plantations and commercial nurseries, where it can cause severe foliage loss and weaken the overall vitality of young and mature specimens alike.
The characteristic signs of infection include circular or irregular spots on leaves. As the disease progresses, small black pycnidia, which are the reproductive structures of the fungus, appear within the lesions.
