Phaeosphaeria spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete fungus Phaeosphaeria eustoma. This pathogen is commonly associated with various leaf spot diseases in cereal crops. It exhibits both pathogenic and saprotrophic capabilities, allowing it to survive on crop residues and attack weakened plant tissues under favorable environmental conditions.
The disease primarily affects cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats. Because the fungus remains active on stubble and straw, it poses a recurring threat in agricultural landscapes where minimal tillage practices are employed or where cereal rotation is frequent, leading to high levels of primary inoculum.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as irregular or oval-shaped spots on the leaf blades, leaf sheaths, and occasionally the glumes. These lesions often show a light-colored center surrounded by a darker margin. Under high humidity, the fungus produces perithecia, appearing as small, dark, pimple-like structures within the necrotic leaf tissue.
