Phaeosphaeria leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Phaeosphaeria nigrans. This pathogen is commonly associated with the necrotrophic or saprotrophic colonization of cereal leaves, stems, and sheaths, often occurring as part of a complex of leaf-spotting diseases in agricultural fields.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye. While it is frequently observed on maturing or senescing plants, it can also infect younger plants under high disease pressure, especially when the crop is already stressed by abiotic factors or existing primary infections.
The symptoms appear as elongated brown or dark-brown lesions on the leaf blades. A diagnostic feature is the presence of small, dark, pimple-like structures on the surface of the lesions, which correspond to the fungal pseudothecia. As the infection progresses, these areas may turn grey or necrotic, eventually leading to premature senescence of the foliage.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, with high humidity, dew, and moderate temperatures acting as primary drivers. The fungus overwinters on infected plant debris, producing ascospores that are discharged into the air and dispersed by rain splashes or wind, initiating new infection cycles on the current crop.
Management of Phaeosphaeria nigrans relies on an integrated approach to minimize the primary inoculum and protect the crop. Key strategies include the burial of crop residues through tillage, the implementation of balanced crop rotation, and the application of broad-spectrum fungicides if the disease reaches a threshold that threatens photosynthetic capacity and final yield.
