The infection typically enters the host through wounds, pruning cuts, or insect-damaged bark. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, producing enzymes and toxins that cause cellular death. If left untreated, the disease can spread throughout the plant, significantly weakening its defense mechanisms against other environmental stressors.

Symptoms of Phaeostalagmus often include the development of dark, necrotic spots on stems or leaves, wilting of branches, and in some cases, bark splitting.
