As the insects thrive, the honeydew accumulates, allowing the fungi to colonize the surface quickly. Spores are easily disseminated via wind currents, rain splashes, and human activity during maintenance.

The economic impact of Phaeothecales is significant in commercial agriculture, as the discoloration makes fruits and ornamental plants unmarketable. Protection strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to eliminate the root cause: the insects. Proper management includes:
