The causal agent of this disease is the obligate fungal pathogen Phakopsora gossypii. It belongs to the order Pucciniales and is recognized as a significant threat to cotton production in specific geographical regions characterized by humid climates.

The primary host plant is cotton (Gossypium species). The fungus is a specialized parasite that targets the foliage, causing significant physiological stress to the plant throughout its vegetative and reproductive developmental stages.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small chlorotic spots appearing on the abaxial side of the leaves. As the disease advances, these spots develop into raised pustules, known as uredinia, which release rusty-brown spores. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation and stunted growth.

The spread and development of the pathogen are driven by high humidity and warm temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind currents over long distances. The infection cycle is often accelerated during rainy seasons when moisture remains on the leaf surfaces, providing optimal conditions for spore germination.
