Description
Pathogen and Disease Type: Asian soybean rust is caused by the obligate fungal pathogen Phakopsora pachyrhizi. It is a highly destructive foliar disease that disrupts the metabolic processes of the plant, significantly impacting the grain-filling stage and overall plant development.
Host Plants: The primary host is the soybean plant (Glycine max). However, the pathogen has a wide host range, infecting over 30 species of legumes, including common beans, lupines, and various kudzu species which act as alternative hosts that maintain the inoculum throughout the year.
Symptoms and Signs: Initial symptoms appear as small, chlorotic, angular lesions on the lower leaf surface, often near the veins. As the disease progresses, these lesions develop into tan or dark-brown pustules containing urediniospores. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation, which severely reduces the yield potential of the crop.
Conditions for Development: The development of Phakopsora pachyrhizi is favored by prolonged periods of leaf wetness and moderate temperatures between 15°C and 28°C. High relative humidity and cloudy weather are essential for the germination of spores and the secondary infection cycles of the fungus.
Impact and Management: The economic impact is immense, with potential yield losses ranging from 20% to 90% in susceptible fields. Management relies on early detection, regular scouting, and the application of fungicides such as triazoles, strobilurins, or SDHIs to prevent the disease from reaching critical stages.
