Jujube rust is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phakopsora ziziphi-vulgaris. It is a specialized obligate parasite that specifically targets members of the Ziziphus genus, primarily Ziziphus jujuba. The disease is widespread in regions where jujube is cultivated, causing significant impact on both leaf health and overall tree vigor.

The host range is primarily limited to jujube trees. In commercial orchards, the pathogen can spread rapidly if conditions favor fungal growth. The rust typically appears mid-to-late season, and without intervention, it can affect nearly all trees within a localized plantation, leading to significant yield losses over time.

Symptoms are identified by the development of minute, powdery, reddish-brown pustules on the undersides of the leaves. Correspondingly, yellow or chlorotic spots appear on the upper surfaces. As the infection progresses, these areas merge, leading to necrosis, leaf curling, and eventual premature defoliation, which severely limits the tree's photosynthetic capacity.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Warm, humid weather with frequent rainfall or heavy dew provides ideal conditions for spore germination and rapid spread. The pathogen often overwinters in fallen leaves, making the orchard floor a primary reservoir for the following season's inoculum.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, as defoliation reduces the tree's ability to store carbohydrates, which is essential for fruit development and cold hardiness. Furthermore, the aesthetic and physical quality of the fruit is compromised when the tree lacks sufficient foliage to support proper fruit ripening, leading to stunted or poor-tasting yields.
