Phanerochaete is a genus of wood-decaying fungi notorious for causing white rot. By degrading lignin and cellulose, these fungi effectively dismantle the structural integrity of timber and living trees, acting as significant pathogens within managed orchards and forest ecosystems.

The disease primarily targets weakened deciduous and coniferous trees, often entering through wounds caused by pruning, storms, or pest infestation. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the internal vascular tissues, disrupting nutrient transport and eventually compromising the entire health of the host plant.

The primary indicators of infection include the presence of membranous, crust-like fruiting bodies on the bark or wood surface. Internally, the wood undergoes a rapid transformation: it turns light-colored, spongy, and brittle, often losing all load-bearing capacity, which creates a severe risk of sudden structural failure.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of Phanerochaete include high humidity and temperatures that support fungal mycelium growth. The pathogen spreads via airborne spores or through contact between infected tools and healthy plant tissue, making it a persistent threat in environments where sanitation is poorly managed.
