Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a well-known basidiomycete fungus identified as a primary agent of white rot in wood. Due to its unique enzymatic system, it is highly efficient at decomposing lignin, which provides structural integrity to trees, thereby acting as a significant pathogen in forest and agricultural pathology.

This fungus primarily attacks various species of broad-leaved and coniferous trees. It is particularly dangerous in orchards and forest plantations where trees have sustained mechanical injuries. Once the protective bark layer is compromised, the mycelium invades the inner sapwood and heartwood, causing internal degradation.

The visible signs of infection include the characteristic bleaching of wood, which turns pale and fibrous as lignin is selectively removed. As the decay progresses, the wood becomes soft, fragile, and spongy, eventually leading to structural instability and the potential collapse of the tree or its branches during high winds.

Optimal development conditions for Phanerochaete chrysosporium include high humidity and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 25°C to 40°C. It spreads via airborne spores that land on wounded surfaces or exposed wood, rapidly establishing colonies in the presence of sufficient moisture.
