Phanerochaete sacrata is a fungal pathogen that acts as a primary agent of white rot in woody plants. This basidiomycete fungus targets the lignin and cellulose components of wood, leading to the progressive degradation of structural integrity in both living trees and woody debris within forest ecosystems.
The fungus typically affects a variety of deciduous tree species. It acts as a wound parasite, often infecting trees through bark wounds, pruning cuts, or breakage caused by environmental stressors. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deep into the heartwood, consuming essential nutrients and causing the tissue to lose its physical density.
Visual symptoms often include a bleached, fibrous appearance of the wood tissue accompanied by a reduction in hardness.
