Alectra is a genus of obligate parasitic plants within the Orobanchaceae family. Unlike conventional weeds, these plants lack sufficient chlorophyll and rely entirely on the host plant for water and nutrients, which they extract via specialized root structures known as haustoria, effectively tapping into the host's vascular system.

The parasite primarily targets leguminous crops, with peanuts being particularly susceptible. Other agricultural hosts include soybeans, cowpeas, and various grains. By siphoning resources directly from the root system, the parasite significantly weakens the host plant, often resulting in severe economic losses if not managed promptly.

Visible symptoms of an Alectra infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), wilting during dry periods, and a noticeable reduction in pod production. Since the parasite attaches underground, the initial stages of infection are often invisible to the farmer, leading to widespread damage before the parasite's flowering stalks eventually emerge.

The development and spread of Alectra are heavily influenced by soil moisture and temperature. Its tiny seeds can remain dormant in the soil for many years, germinating only when they detect chemical exudates from the roots of a suitable host plant. This unique biological trait allows the parasite to persist in fields even through long crop rotations.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant crop varieties and trap crops to stimulate premature germination of Alectra seeds. Additionally, maintaining high sanitation standards, performing timely weeding to prevent seed production, and utilizing targeted chemical treatments are essential to mitigate the impact of this parasitic threat.
