The Phaneromycetaceae family encompasses various basidiomycete fungi that are recognized as significant agents of wood decay and opportunistic plant disease. These organisms play a complex role in ecosystems but act as harmful pathogens in commercial orchards and cultivated woody plant settings.

The disease is primarily caused by fungi belonging to the Polyporales order. These pathogens are characterized by their potent wood-decaying ability, utilizing enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose components, which results in internal rot and structural failure of the host plant.

Typical hosts include fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and forest trees. The infection generally begins at points of mechanical injury, such as pruning cuts, broken branches, or frost cracks, allowing the fungal mycelium to penetrate the heartwood of the tree.

Symptoms are often internal, making early diagnosis difficult. Common indicators include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies on the bark, soft and spongy texture of the timber, and a general decline in the tree's vitality.
