Phellinidium is a genus of wood-decaying fungi characterized by their ability to thrive as pathogens in forest environments. These fungi are significant agents of tree decay, primarily targeting the heartwood of the stem and branches, which can lead to structural failure and the long-term degradation of forest stands.

The disease manifests as stem rot or butt rot, depending on the site of initial infection. The fungus secretes specific enzymes that degrade complex structural components of wood cells, primarily lignin and cellulose. This process transforms healthy, load-bearing wood into fragile, decayed material, significantly compromising the stability of the tree.

The host range of Phellinidium includes various coniferous species, such as fir and spruce, as well as some broad-leaved trees. The pathogen typically enters the tree through open wounds in the bark, such as those caused by frost, branch breakage, or human activity during harvesting operations.

Key symptoms include the emergence of perennial fruit bodies (conks) on the trunks of infected trees. These structures are often tough and woody in consistency. Internally, the wood shows classic signs of advanced rot: discoloration, increased friability, and the presence of white mycelial mats that disrupt normal tissue function.

Management and protection strategies focus heavily on preventive silviculture. This includes the systematic identification and removal of infected trees to reduce the inoculum load in the forest, minimizing mechanical damage to bark during maintenance, and promoting overall tree vigor through appropriate site management practices.
