Phellinidium fragrans is a significant wood-decay fungus that acts as a pathogen, causing severe stem rot in various deciduous tree species. As a basidiomycete, it is primarily associated with the degradation of structural timber in living trees, making it a critical subject of study in forest pathology and silviculture.
The fungus typically infects hardwoods such as elm, linden, and maple. It enters the tree through mechanical injuries, branch stubs, or sunscald wounds. Once established, the mycelium colonizes the heartwood, slowly breaking down the tree's chemical structure and significantly compromising the mechanical integrity of the trunk.
Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of perennial fruiting bodies (basidiocarps) on the bark of infected trees. These structures are often hoof-shaped or resupinate, possess a distinct woody texture, and release a characteristic pleasant, fruity or anise-like odor, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for field identification.
The development and spread of Phellinidium fragrans are favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures found in temperate forest ecosystems. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind, infecting trees that have been weakened by environmental stress or age. The pathogen thrives in old-growth stands where dead branch stubs are abundant.
Control and prevention strategies are focused on long-term forest management practices. These include the systematic removal of heavily infected trees and standing deadwood to reduce the overall inoculum load in the forest. Minimizing logging damage to residual trees is also an effective preventative measure to stop new infections from taking hold.
