These fungi function as white-rot or yellow-rot agents, systematically breaking down lignin and cellulose within the wood, which leads to significant structural compromise of the host plant.
The host range of Phellinus is extensive, affecting both broadleaf and coniferous species across diverse climates. Trees that are already stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or physical injuries are significantly more susceptible to infection. Once the fungus establishes itself, it spreads steadily through the heartwood, often going unnoticed for several years.
