Phellinus punctatus is a wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white rot in various hardwood species. As a parasitic pathogen, it systematically breaks down the structural integrity of the host's wood, specifically targeting the xylem to extract nutrients, which eventually leads to the decline and structural failure of the affected tree.
This fungus primarily infests deciduous trees such as willow, poplar, alder, apple, and rowan. It typically gains entry into the host through open wounds, pruning cuts, or physical injuries to the bark. Once inside, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, consuming essential components of the wood structure.
The most recognizable signs of an infection include the presence of inconspicuous, crust-like fruiting bodies found within bark crevices or on dead branch stubs. As the rot progresses internally, the wood becomes soft, spongy, and brittle, often turning a pale white color, significantly weakening the tree's ability to withstand environmental stress.
Environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and stable moderate temperatures, significantly favor the growth and reproduction of this pathogen. Spores are disseminated by wind and water, allowing the fungus to infect nearby susceptible hosts during the growing season whenever there is an exposed entry point on the tree's surface.
Effective management and prevention strategies revolve around sound arboricultural practices. Critical steps include maintaining tree health to improve natural defenses, removing and destroying heavily infected wood, and carefully sealing large pruning wounds.
