Phellinus wahlbergii is a destructive wood-decay fungus belonging to the Hymenochaetaceae family. It is known to cause white rot, a process in which the fungus decomposes both cellulose and lignin, leading to the gradual degradation of the host tree's internal structural integrity.
This pathogen primarily targets a wide range of broad-leaved and tropical tree species. It behaves as a parasite on weakened living trees, establishing itself through bark injuries, pruning wounds, or frost cracks. Once established, it acts as a persistent wood rotter that can survive for many years within the heartwood.
Key symptoms include the emergence of perennial, hoof-shaped, or shelf-like fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. The infected wood typically turns brittle, takes on a bleached appearance with visible dark zone lines, and eventually becomes fibrous. Over time, the affected areas lose their load-bearing capacity, significantly increasing the risk of structural failure.
The fungus thrives in conditions of high humidity and is facilitated by the presence of exposed wood surfaces. The primary mode of spread involves the dispersal of spores by wind, which colonize susceptible tissues. Anthropogenic factors, such as the use of unsterilized pruning saws and shears, play a significant role in spreading the pathogen between trees.
