Black tooth fungus (Phellodon niger) is a member of the Bankeraceae family known for its dark, leathery fruiting bodies. In forestry and plant pathology, it is recognized for its ability to form dense mycelial mats that can interfere with the root health of coniferous trees, acting as a potential stressor in nursery environments.
The organism primarily acts as a mycorrhizal fungus that, under certain environmental pressures, competes with beneficial soil organisms. By blanketing the root system of host trees, it disrupts the nutrient uptake process, leading to physiological stress within the plant host.
Coniferous species, particularly spruce and pine, are the most frequent hosts for this fungus. It thrives in forest ecosystems where the soil is rich in organic matter, often spreading through the soil layer to colonize the rhizosphere of susceptible young trees or nursery stock.
Symptoms of an infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing) of the needles, and a visible decline in the vitality of the seedlings.
