Description

Phialophora wilt is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phialophora fasciculata. This micromycete belongs to a group of fungi that cause vascular wilting and necrotic lesions in woody perennial plants, primarily affecting grapevines. The infection targets the xylem, disrupting the transportation of nutrients and water within the plant.

The main crop susceptible to this disease is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The pathogen is capable of infecting both young nursery saplings and mature, fruit-bearing vines in commercial vineyards. The disease often develops latently, making early diagnosis and effective management extremely challenging.

Symptoms of the infection include gradual leaf wilting, which starts at the margins and spreads toward the center of the leaf blade. Eventually, shoot dieback occurs. When examining cross-sections of the wood, one can observe characteristic brown or dark brown streaks, which indicate the blockage of vascular vessels by fungal mycelium and its metabolic byproducts.

The development of Phialophora fasciculata is favored by high soil moisture, frequent rainfall, and moderate ambient temperatures. The fungus typically enters the plant through mechanical wounds in the bark, pruning cuts, or root system injuries caused during cultivation. Spores are dispersed by rain splashes, wind, as well as via infected planting stock and contaminated pruning tools.

Management strategies require an integrated approach: using healthy, certified planting material and strictly following phytosanitary protocols. It is essential to disinfect pruning tools between individual vines and to remove and destroy infected plant parts. As chemical control options are currently limited, the emphasis remains on enhancing plant vigor and implementing preventative measures to protect woody tissues from infection.
