The host range includes a variety of coniferous and deciduous trees. The infection is particularly prevalent in forest stands weakened by drought or mechanical stress, as well as in stored timber that has not been properly seasoned. The pathogen can thrive in various climates, provided there is sufficient moisture for spore germination and mycelial growth.
Symptoms of Phialophora lignicola infection are characterized by distinct discoloration of the wood, which typically appears as grey, brown, or blue-black streaks and patches. As the fungal colonization progresses, the internal wood structure begins to deteriorate, leading to a significant reduction in structural integrity and commercial timber value.
