Description
Phialophora wilt is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phialophora luteo-viridis. This soil-borne fungus primarily targets the plant's vascular system, leading to systemic disruption of water and nutrient transport, which eventually results in the decline of the host organism.
The disease affects a variety of plant species, including trees, shrubs, and certain agricultural crops. The pathogen typically enters the plant via the root system, often utilizing wounds created during cultivation, transplanting, or damage caused by soil-dwelling pests and nematodes.
Visible symptoms often begin with wilting and yellowing of the leaves, progressing to necrosis as the vascular blockage worsens. A diagnostic feature is the distinct discoloration of the vascular tissue, visible as dark streaking or staining in the cross-sections of the roots and lower stems of infected plants.
The spread of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. Because the pathogen is capable of surviving as a saprophyte in crop residues, it can persist in the soil for extended periods, making eradication very difficult once the soil becomes infested.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive measures. Key practices include using certified disease-free planting stock, implementing crop rotation, and improving soil drainage.
