Phialophora wilt is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Phialophora parasitica. This fungus acts as a vascular parasite, colonizing the xylem vessels of the plant, which prevents the transport of water and nutrients. The infection can lead to chronic decline or rapid wilting, often causing irreversible damage to various plant species, particularly those in temperate and tropical environments.
A wide range of plants serves as hosts for this pathogen, with palm species, certain fruit trees, and various ornamental woody plants being most susceptible. The disease is frequently identified in nurseries and plantations, where intensive management practices and high plant density facilitate the spread of fungal spores through contaminated soil and shared tools.
Visual signs of infection typically include chlorosis (yellowing), flagging of leaves, and premature leaf drop. In woody plants, if you observe a cross-section of an infected branch or stem, you will often find characteristic vascular discoloration, which ranges from light brown to black streaks. As the disease progresses, the impaired flow of nutrients leads to branch dieback and, eventually, the systemic death of the entire plant.
The development of Phialophora parasitica is closely linked to environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels. The fungus thrives in moist soils and can persist in organic matter or the root zone for extended periods.
