Phialophora wilt is a serious condition caused by the fungus Phialophora verrucosa, which acts as a systemic pathogen. This fungus targets the vascular tissues of various woody plants, effectively disrupting the hydraulic conductivity of the xylem and leading to the gradual decline of the host plant.
The host range for this pathogen includes various horticultural and ornamental species, with grapevines and woody shrubs being particularly susceptible. The fungus is known for its ability to persist in the host tissue for extended periods, making it a challenging pathogen to manage in commercial plantations.
The symptoms of infection are often characterized by internal wood discoloration, which can be observed upon pruning or cross-sectioning stems. Foliar symptoms may include wilting, chlorosis, and general dieback of the branches, as the fungus prevents essential nutrients and water from reaching the upper canopy.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on the presence of entry points such as pruning wounds, insect feeding sites, or mechanical damage to the bark. Warm temperatures and high relative humidity significantly increase the likelihood of spore germination and infection establishment within the plant structure.
Management and prevention focus primarily on hygiene and sanitation. It is essential to sanitize all pruning equipment between trees to avoid mechanical transmission of the spores.
