Phlebia is a genus of fungi within the Meruliaceae family that is primarily known for causing white rot in various woody plants. While these fungi are essential in forest ecosystems for decomposing dead organic matter, they can become detrimental in agricultural settings when they colonize orchard trees, leading to structural instability and necrosis.

The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that invade tree tissues through wounds, pruning cuts, or frost-damaged bark. Once inside, the mycelium breaks down the complex polymers of the wood, specifically targeting lignin, which results in the loss of structural integrity and causes the characteristic white rot appearance.

This pathogen commonly affects a wide range of fruit-bearing trees, including apple, pear, and nut-producing species. The susceptibility of these trees increases when they are stressed due to drought, nutritional deficiencies, or lack of proper canopy management, making them easier targets for fungal spore colonization.

Key symptoms include the emergence of waxy, wrinkled, or crust-like fungal sporocarps on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the heartwood becomes brittle, fibrous, and discolored. Over time, the internal decay compromises the tree's ability to transport nutrients, leading to reduced yields and eventual branch breakage.

Management strategies focus on preventing infection by minimizing wounds and properly sealing necessary cuts with specialized pastes. Maintaining high tree vigor through consistent fertilization and pruning practices is essential to create a resilient environment that discourages the establishment and spread of wood-decay fungi like Phlebia.

Proactive monitoring of the orchard is crucial. Any trees showing signs of bark necrosis or visible fungal growth should be evaluated for structural damage. Removal of deadwood and infected branches, followed by proper disposal, prevents the further release of spores, thus protecting the surrounding healthy trees from infestation.
