This fungus is classified as a weak parasite or saprotroph, often colonizing stressed or damaged tissues, eventually causing bark necrosis and structural deterioration.

The disease frequently targets mature trees that exhibit physiological weakness or external injuries. Entry points for the fungus typically include frost cracks, mechanical damage from logging or pruning, and areas where the bark has been compromised by insect activity or environmental stress factors.

The presence of the fungus is most visible through its characteristic fruiting bodies. These appear as tiny, stalked, brown to greyish-brown pustules on the bark surface. As the fungal cycle progresses, these structures release spores that can be easily disseminated by wind or rain splash, spreading the infection to neighboring trees.
