Phlyctema spot is a fungal disease caused by species of the genus Phlyctema, most notably Phlyctema vagabunda. This pathogen is categorized as a necrotic disease agent that primarily affects the physical integrity of fruit crops, leading to decay during the growth stage and post-harvest storage.

The disease is characterized by the formation of necrotic lesions on host tissues. The fungus acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, releasing enzymes that degrade plant cells, which results in the development of soft or dry rot spots. These lesions often serve as primary entry points for secondary pathogens, further complicating crop health.

A wide variety of crops are susceptible to this disease, with fruit trees like apples and pears being the most significantly affected. In orchard conditions, the fungus often colonizes the bark and twigs, while fruits exhibit circular, slightly depressed spots that can merge as the disease progresses under conducive conditions.

The spread of the infection is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain-splashed spores are the primary mode of transmission in the field, while high relative humidity within cold storage facilities significantly accelerates the development of rot, causing substantial economic losses.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize fungal inoculum in the agro-ecosystem:
