The genus Pholiota, commonly referred to as scaly cap mushrooms, consists of fungi that can function as opportunistic pathogens. In agricultural and forestry contexts, they are primarily associated with the development of white rot in woody plants, leading to the progressive degradation of structural tissues within the host tree.
These fungi typically attack fruit trees such as apples, pears, and stone fruits, especially when the host is stressed or compromised. While they frequently exist as saprotrophs on decaying wood, their ability to colonize living tissue through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or insect damage makes them a significant concern for orchard longevity.
The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of distinctive, scaly, yellow-to-brown fruiting bodies on the trunk or large limbs. Internally, the wood loses its tensile strength as the fungus decomposes lignin and cellulose. This process often results in the formation of hollow cavities, predisposing the tree to structural failure or breakage during high winds.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread and establishment of Pholiota include persistent high humidity, poor orchard hygiene, and the presence of unprotected bark lesions. Spores are disseminated by wind and water, landing on open wounds where they germinate and initiate the colonization of the xylem and phloem, eventually disrupting the tree's vascular system.
Effective control strategies focus on rigorous orchard sanitation and preventative care. This includes the prompt removal of heavily infested wood, strict disinfection of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and the sealing of all significant pruning cuts or bark wounds with professional wound dressing. Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation is key to increasing host resistance against fungal colonization.
