Description

Pholiota highlandensis is a species of gilled mushroom in the family Strophariaceae. In an agronomic context, it is recognized as a carbonicolous (fire-loving) fungus. It is commonly found colonizing soil and wood debris that has been subjected to fire, making it a frequent colonizer in forest nurseries where debris burning has occurred.

The causative agent of the fungal growth is the mycelium, which thrives in substrates enriched with ash and charcoal. The spores are wind-dispersed and land on substrates where the natural microbial competition has been temporarily reduced or altered by heat, allowing the fungus to establish itself rapidly as a pioneer species.

This fungus typically impacts forestry nursery plots and cleared lands. While it is primarily saprotrophic, its presence is a negative indicator for plant health. By rapidly decomposing organic matter and altering the pH level of the soil, it may inadvertently affect the uptake of nutrients by seedlings and create an unfavorable environment for the development of root systems in young forest crops.

The diagnostic signs of its presence include the formation of dense, yellowish-brown fungal mats on the soil surface, followed by the emergence of clusters of small, sticky-capped mushrooms. These fruiting bodies often appear in circular patterns around burnt areas or spots where organic matter was incinerated, signaling a significant colonization of the underground mycelium.

Effective management requires strict sanitation protocols to prevent the establishment of the fungus. Avoiding open fires on planting beds is the most critical preventative measure. If an outbreak occurs, affected soil should be tilled deeply to expose the mycelium to UV light and air, and chemical amendments should be used to neutralize the soil chemistry altered by the fungal growth, thereby restoring balance for the cultivated crop.
